23rd-Oct-2013 11:25 pm - Broadcast delayed - for a good cause!
dwrpnews: (Default)
The broadcast will be up tomorrow - why? For a good cause.

Next weekend is the Extra Life campaign where you can watch, among others, my brother stream video games and earn money for the Children's Miracle Network. I'll be present for a portion of the stream before heading off to work.

BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!

Since I can't be there the whole time to support my bro, I want to make sure I do everything I can beforehand. As such, I am offering a...
DWRP News Contest

What do I have to do?
  • If you donate at least $5.00 (5 USD) to the Nephiwarrior page (that's my bro), you join a raffle for 2 months of PAID ACCOUNT TIME courtesy of DWRP News!

  • If more than 100 people donate $5.00 (5 USD), then 1 more winner will get the PAID ACCOUNT TIME. If 200 people do that, then 3 people win PAID ACCOUNT TIME. And so forth and so on!

How will you know who to gift the time to?
  • When you go to make a donation, there are two places to put your name: the CONTACT DETAILS and the billing details. We cannot see your billing details. You should put your legal name there. In the CONTACT DETAILS as your first name put DWRP and as your last name put the Account you would want the paid account time sent to, if you win.

  • While I am on the stream, I will be keeping a running total of our total contributions as DWRPers!

I want to do more than that!
  • Great! If you donate more than $25, you will be entered in a completely separate raffle* for a GRAND PRIZE - a gift card for 15 icons from [personal profile] brush!

  • Again, if more than 100 people donate, DWRP News will support additional prizes! Will they be more icon sets from [personal profile] brush? Tune in to find out!

International Friends and anyone else unable to use the preferred method
  • I am looking into the best possible option to accommodate you. I want to protect your identity such that the only thing I ever receive is your DW account name and your contribution amount. Let me know in the unscreened comments if you have a suggestion; I'm leery of paypal, but it might be the only option.

*Note: Anyone who does not win the 'separate' raffle for the Grand Prize(s) will be placed into the regular raffle before that drawing commences.

Expect prizes dispersed within one month of next Saturday (the day of the contest), depending on how many people donate. If more people donate, that's great, but that means there's more tallying for us to do XD;

NOVEMBER 2ND, TUNE IN FOR CHARITY, FOR PRIZES!

Hey folks, Frudence again! Since this is kind of a funny little update, I'm going to start off with Miscellany.

Miscellany

When I suggested a segment called Foreign Affairs, I expected it to be about InsaneJournal or Livejournal games, not games in languages other than English. Surprsingly, this mention is both! Over on IJ, there's a game called Mansión Perdida -- a multifandom RPG in Spanish! They've been around since 2008, so that's really cool! The game is surrounded by a Neverending Story-like Nothingness and your character wakes up in a graveyard. Other than that, our friendly neighborhood tipster claims it's not actually a horror game, mostly. This Halloween they're having an event based on The Booth At The End lasting all the way through November. If you're proficient at Spanish, you should really give it a shot! Apps are always open.

If you haven't found out about LJ Login / LJ Juggler yet, what are you waiting for? It's a journal-based RP'ers best friend! Next only to Lazarus, perhaps; Lazarus is special because I actually use it outside of journal-based RPing. It's absolutely amazing.

And now for the Weather Patterns

Amatomnes [community profile] amatomnes is hosting a 4th wall event! They have a whole comm dedicated to it over at [community profile] amatpartygames, which is how you don't have to get added to the main community for the duration of the event. If you've ever wondered what's so special - and awesome - about Amat, here's your chance! Rules for the event are here. All kinds of characters that have been left on the island for years are at your disposal for taking a sip of the ambrosia.

How does a game dealing with both memory loss and a real-earth reincarnation AU sound? If any part of that is tempting, drop in on the Save The Earth test drive meme for [community profile] savetheearth! This game looks incredibly interesting, at least to me. It strikes me as some of the best elements to Edensphere [community profile] edensphere and Damned [personal profile] damned_info, the former of which is sadly long gone and the latter of which is ending in several months last I heard. No I'm not biased at all, it's just your imagination. Add in a dash of encouraged backstory weaving a lá Onorata nostalgia still not biased and you have yourselves one heck of a reason to test drive this beauty!

One pretty cool plot to note hasn't even wrapped up yet, but it's happening over at Somarium [community profile] somarium! The mods put up a poll to let the players choose the final ending for the plot! So far Good end is winning. Sweeeet. I'd love to see more mods pre-planning with player input like this! Especially for more innocuous 'random' events instead of plot-heavy ones, although I'd argue that usually those would benefit from players affecting the outcome too.

ATP is coming soon on the 26th, so I expect I'll be liveplurking that event and perhaps others, if it looks fun to people. Mostly I'm interested in what kinds of large cast movements we'll see. For example, will the announcement that Homestuck is ending after a hiatus increase or decrease the multitudes? At what point in the holiday season will the Sailor Moon fanbase reemerge to former glory? With the new Firefly comics being released, will the infamous Jossverse shine again? I can't wait to find out!

On to Traffic!

With the incredible honor of being the first Mod Application announcement, Destiny Strings [community profile] destinystrings comes attached to several other announcements! The 4th wall event at Destiny Strings has ended, and application changes took place. Check out parts one and two of the updates for more details!

Apps over in [community profile] campfuckuvote can no longer be voted on for this session, so if you missed your application window, your next opportunity will be November 13th until November 17th. To see which characters they'd love to see in camp, or request a beta read of your app, head on over to this announcement.

For a panfandom game set in modern-day Las Vegas with, of course, a side of kink -- check out Amongst the Wave (best look at the mod account [personal profile] amongstthewave_mod), a rather deceptive title in my humble opinion, because I was definitely thinking fantasy. The game may or may not be fully opened yet, since it's entirely possible that - like Amat and Promixa - they value secrecy for the players. They have several reserves, though, so I wish them good luck!

And what is Proxima? So glad you asked! Their tagline is "Pleasure without conscience; Science without humanity." Over on [community profile] proximabeta, you will find a panfandom science fiction sex game - I know I just mentioned it in the previous broadcast, but have you SEEN this reserve page lately? Holy wow! They received 76 reserves in less than 24 hours! Good luck and healthy fun to all!

Boy there's a lot of sci-fi to talk about today. Shall we blame Pacific Rim? Maybe, but it's a good kind of blame. Ataraxion [community profile] ataraxion's reserves are open and will remain so until October 31st - that's certainly easy to remember! They say 12:00 AM EST right now on that day, so if you miss it, you can't say I didn't warn you this time! Unlike previous times when I got those wrong. Apps will open just as soon as Reserves close and remain that way until the 7th of November... ish. They haven't updated the Applications page yet, but it's a safe bet.

Speaking of games I definitely got the premise wrong for based on name alone, we have Montauk-1 Allende-18 (best to check out [personal profile] montauk_mods). I could have sworn it too would be sci-fi, like the name of a planet, named in the fashion of Star Wars / Star Trek solar systems. Well, based on their maps the whole naming idea might not be that far off, but the game itself is in the survival horror genre, set in Seattle of the 1970s as if abandoned quite unceremoniously. If you're going to play here, definitely drop me a line when plots happen!

The game's not open yet, but "The OGLAF game" ([community profile] apprenticewanted) is another one drawing lots of attention and lots of reserves! I dare you to successfully app a character from Homestuck after that rush, geez ow. I'm starting to miss Hetalia. There's also a sizable Marvel cast starting there, Naruto, and Pacific Ri-- DANGIT SCI-FI AGAIN? This game's mostly fantasy! ... and probably a lot of sex jokes. If not actual sex.

The last stop on today's broadcast is, appropriately enough, The Tartarus Experiment [community profile] tartarusnet. With heavy elements of torture, I'm not surprised it takes a firm grip to play here. Until the lighthearted events kick in, or the Persona 2 cast creates a social club to rival Ouran, who knows. The other fascinating group to take root here is a gang from Wildstorm Comics - which I honestly had never heard of, but there are 5 characters present as of today, so maybe they're worth checking out!

That's it for today folks and as always may the road rise to meet you!

Hey folks I'm Frudence and this is going to be an all-in-one update with all of the segments labeled to get the new schedule going. If you didn't see the Poll results, I'll be moving to text transcripts provided 3 times a week and one video broadcast like you're used to.

To keep this short I'm going to stick to mistakes from last week and comments specifically left to me by you wonderful people, then do more of my own research this weekend. First off, I got the name of a game wrong. It's not The Round Table -- it's Knights of Legend [community profile] knightsoflegend. Sorry folks, I really do like your game, that was just the name of the OOC comm apparently.

Also, due to my personal experience of having a game literally close due to player frustrations about quote Playing House taking more precedent than Serious Plot, I subconsciously group games into sex-friendly and sex-wary, I guess. One of those sex-friendly games is Throne of Shadows [community profile] thenetwork. It's not a sex game per se -- not like Amat [community profile] amatomnes where if your character doesn't have sex there is in-game repercussions, which some players do intentionally heh. Anyway, Throne of Shadows is simply okay with your characters having sex. That was what I MEANT but it came out as 'this is a game focused on sex' which is not accurate. I even said I'd played there, so that really was a slip-up.

On to Traffic!

Paradisa's [community profile] paradisa returning characters applications will be open until October 21st yet! That's pretty cool. Your next chance won't be until December, so don't miss out on that! I'll have to put it on my calendar as a December reminder.

On the front of apps for the Vatheon [community profile] vatheon import to Bastion [community profile] thebastion -- those apps remain open until October 24th. The actual event will be October 26th. I will be a literal hawk over that plot thread, I'm just saying.

Here's a new game on my radar -- Teleios [community profile] teleios. They use a popular method of character greeting where all newbies get pulled in at the same time with an arrival post, or welcome wagon post as I used to call it. It's a no-network game, where most everything is face-to-face. I've seen games like that struggle, so good luck to you folks. There's supposedly going to be an app-freeze from December to February, so if you're interested in a redemption in a golden city plagued by the most heroic and villanous characters panfandom has to offer with a back plot reminiscent of Dissidia - at least to me - then make sure to get your apps in A-S-A-P.

Speaking of posh locales, check out The Country Within the Palace [community profile] country_within_the_palace. They've had a mod changeover, which is never easy I know from experience, and boast a revamped experience. Since apps are always open, there's no excuse not to check them out. I love that they chose a very different setting for this game, if it's not obvious from the Djinn included in the backstory. Similar to Amat, there is a magical force that sustains the game, but sex is not the only way to create it. CWP is also smaller and more medium-paced. Another really interesting aspect are the guilds, much like other professional guilds you may be familiar with from History or Historical Fantasy video games - that's also how the magical force can be created.

Then there's Proxima Beta [community profile] proximabeta, a panfandom sex game set in a sci-fi world that was man-made. There's scientists conducting social experiments, so you know that can't be good. Reserves are open and the game isn't - yet - so get in on the action at the ground floor and see how long you can last! Especially with a chip in your neck. Eek.

Since we're talking tech -- maybe you're not into sex games, but do like sci-fi. Re/Aligned [community profile] re_alignment is a Transformers themed game set on Cybertron. I have to believe every player there is twice as good as Michael Bay or better. Apps are open as of the 15th and rumor has it that they need some new blood to grease their wheels. Activity checks are only every 2 months if you struggle with those. One kind of cool thing about this game is that since it's freaking Cybertron, everything is oversized anyway - meaning if your character is huge, you don't have to resize them. From what I can tell, you're also not being required to turn them INTO Transformers -- although that would be a cool AU app. Last thing -- I love that they're including Alignments, or Polarity hah. Anyway it's not like D&D alignments, but that's where my experience comes from -- much like Asgard and Harry Potter houses, it's more along the lines of What Do You Stand For.

But for a different sort of nostalgia, HOOOOLY CRAP THERE'S A SPYRO UNIVERSE GAME!! You, dear mods, are my new favorite people. That was my favorite game growing up -- and it's set in freaking Avalar [community profile] avalar. Awesome. Apps and reserves are always open for now - and who doesn't want to hang out with dragons, satyrs, and bipedal cheetahs? Oh and dragonflies -- they don't say HEY LISTEN, at least. It's a pretty new game too, so you're not looking at much history either. There's some kind of magic problem that the Outsiders are being brought in to help with. Sounds like a good enough reason to me.

Weather Patterns

Thoughtformed [community profile] thoughtformed recently hosted a Haunted Carnival, but as quickly as it came it disappeared. Since the game is about fictional characters coming to life, it's interesting that dropped characters are considered released like from a prison. There's only one community for both network and log posts, so at a glance the game seems to be medium speed these days. I think it's a pretty interesting premise when the whole game is a 4th wall breaker - you don't see that often these days.

Another rarity is the game We The Lost [community profile] wethelost - calling it a CRAU game is a deceptively obvious acronym that I had never come across before. CR + AU, previous CR from an alternate universe. The only character applications allowed in We The Lost are those previously apped to other games. You've probably seen those characters allowed to be apped elsewhere, but always alongside characters fresh from canon too. Instead, the moderators portray this game as an opportunity for healing, since characters are rarely dropped under 'good' circumstances. It's an almost Polly Pocket-like world with a young god attending it - try it out if you're pining for an old friend you lost to an activity check.

Miscellany

Cape and Cowl [community profile] capeandcowl just celebrated Year 5 on the 10th! Wow! Now they're gearing up for a multi-dimensional adventure of super heroic proportions against the group called Vulcanus. When it comes to this game, you can only assume it's going to be quite the showdown!

As expected of a game called My Little Jamjar [community profile] mylittlejamjar, everyone is a pony - and near as I can tell it's not that your characters were born there, they get transformed when they join the game. They're only 6 months old and have already used up the world's supply of horse puns, so they need your help making more!
17th-Oct-2013 07:43 am - Update: Poll Results
dwrpnews: (Default)
Hey folks - I'm checking in to let you know the results of the poll - more specifically, what they mean to me.

Format-wise, the Video did win out, but only by a narrow margin. I had mentioned on plurk several times that my goal was not just to see which option won, but how close the results came - it's why I didn't provide a Both option. As a result...

All videos will now come with Transcripts.

Audio-only didn't get as big a following, so I will not be focusing on creating a podcasting stream just yet. I know how to do it, but the Video/audio combo won out in that regard.

Now factor in the results of the Frequency question - more content less often, or frequent updating. Well, videos do take longer just on sheer workload than text posts, so that's one way that 'content' will continue to be included with each broadcast. However, 33% is a lot of people - contrast it with the overwhelming results of the last question - and since the Format question was so very closely tied anyway...

Each week will feature 2 text* broadcasts and 1 video broadcast. *With an audio-only recording for accessibility reasons. Don't know where that will be hosted just yet.

As I just alluded to, the answer was overwhelming for the last question. I wanted to see about expanding the DWRP community, but clearly won't be doing it in that manner.

SO! A FINAL NOTE ON SCHEDULING! Come November, my work schedule changes such that Wednesdays will be the best day to release the Video broadcast. That means Mondays and Fridays will get the Text* broadcasts mentioned above. Until November, I'll provide 1 weekly video broadcast only with the transcript.

Comments will be unscreened on this post - let me know if these changes will provide what you look for in DWRP News! And thank you once again for participating in the poll!
10th-Oct-2013 11:07 pm - Audience Participation
